I was vaguely aware at the time that five and ten speed bikes had multiple sprockets on the outside of their rear axle, and that a mechanism derailleur moved the chain between the sprockets. But on my bike all I had was a fat shiny axle that I had to squirt a few drops of oil into once in a while. If I ever wondered what was going on inside that axle to achieve what the derailleur achieved on those other bikes, I don’t recall. I was ten.
